Coast Guard suspends their search for 14 year old off of Westport

June 13, 2012

The Coast Guard has suspended their search for a 14-year-old boy in the water approximately one mile south of Westport off Cohassett Beach.

The Coast Guard received a report stating the boy had been swimming with a 12-year-old friend on the beach at approximately 5 pm on Tuesday, when the undertow pulled them offshore. The 12-year-old was able to swim back to shore and was able to see the 14-year-old for several minutes before losing sight of him.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria and response boat crews from Westport to assist in the search. The Coast Guard and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Department also conducted beach patrols in the area that the boy went missing. The joint agency search was suspended at 10:30 pm on Tuesday.

The 12-year-old boy was assisted by local EMS on shore and reported to be in stable condition.
