Report of 4 teens in rip current reminds residents of the danger

June 21, 2012

The Ocean Shores Police Surf Rescue Team responded to a report of three teenagers in distress in the surf just off of the Marine View Drive beach approach on Wednesday. All 3 appeared to have been caught in a rip current.

Responders learned that a 4th person went in to the surf to try to help the others. The Surf Rescue Team arrived at the scene within 6 minutes after receiving the call and as the teams arrived all four of the teens were just making it back to shore.

Ocean Shores Fire Department personnel checked the subjects on scene and found none required further attention.

All 4 teens were from the Seattle area down in Ocean Shores for vacation.

The Ocean Shores Police Surf Rescue Team wants to remind visitors, as well as local residents, that Washington’s coast has some of the most severe rip currents in the Northwest. Swimmers should stay in shallow water no deeper than their waists and if they do become trapped in a rip current they are reminded to swim parallel to the shoreline until they are out of the current before attempting to swim back to shore.
