Hoquiam bans smoking in city parks
August 14, 2012
Last night, the Hoquiam City Council passed a ban on smoking in public areas.
The smoking ban was amended from the original proposal that prohibited smoking on all city property to just a ban on the named parks in the city. The original proposal also banned smokeless tobacco within the city.
Karolyn Holden from the Grays Harbor County Health Department gave a presentation at the beginning of the meeting and said this type of ban is taking place around the state including King County and Puyallup. Aberdeen City Council Member Jeff Cook commended the city on how progressive they were being on the issue.
The ban passed with a nine-two vote. The two no votes came from councilmen John Wiedl and Ben Winkelman.
