City of Cosmopolis renews medical marijuana moritorium
The City of Cosmopolis last night, in preparation of the November ballot measure I-502 that could possibly legalize marijuana sales in Washington, renewed their moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries within the city.
Cities are allowed to renew moratoriums in 6 month intervals. Last week, the City of Hoquiam renewed their moratorium as well.
The city had placed a moratorium in June of 2011 after receiving an application from an individual who stated they planned to open a dispensary within city limits. That same individual had sent letters to cities across the state. That measure expired in December.
City Attorney Steven Hyde said that the best option for the city is to wait until the election to see how the State plans to govern the drug.
While the council passed the moratorium, they also scheduled a public hearing to better understand how residents stand on the issue. Councilman Carl Sperring said in the meeting, that he felt passing the ordinance before asking the people seemed premature.
The public hearing to discuss the moratorium is scheduled for September 19th at 7pm at City Hall.
