You may ride on a ferry named “Hoquiam” one day

The City of Hoquiam issued a proclamation on Monday to submit “Hoquiam” as a possible name to be considered for one of two new Washington State ferries.

The Washington State Transportation Commission is inviting people statewide to submit name ideas for the boat. Many of the 23 in the fleet already have names that reflect the tribal heritage such as the “Hyak” and “Elwha”.

The commission announced the call for names in August, saying that submissions should carry statewide significance and have a broad familiarity to travelers.

The council cited the both the tribal history of the area as well as their impact on the logging industry to support their submission.

Naming proposals must be received by close of business Wednesday, Sept. 26. Proposals may be mailed or emailed to:
