Ferry naming set today before noon
November 13, 2012
We are set to find out today at noon if the State Transportation Commission has chosen Hoquiam as one of the names for 2 new ferries joining the state fleet. On their agenda, the naming of these 2 vessels is set to be finalized by lunchtime.
Also on the final list are 5 tribal names; Cowlitz, Muckleshoot, Samish, Sammamish and Tokitae, as well as the name of Seattle business owner Ivar Haglund. Many of the ships in the fleet already have names that reflect tribal heritage
The commission stated back in August that any new name should carry statewide significance and have a broad familiarity to travelers.
Washington State has the largest ferry service in the world, carrying 11 million travelers annually.
