Yesterday at about 5:06 P.M. Aberdeen Officers were sent to a home in the 2100 block of Arnold St. on a call about an adult in a car approaching a young child.

The investigating officer was told that a ten year old male was walking down Arnold street, between 8th and 9th Ave. The young male told the officer that a gray or silver colored car, possibly a Honda, passed him and said he heard the car turn around and head back toward him.

The child said the car stopped next to him on Arnold St. He told the officer that a man in the back seat opened a door and told him to get in. The young male said he ran away, down Arnold Street.

The child ran to a home in the 700 Block of 8th Ave and was met by a witness who lives there. The witness said they heard a young child yelling for help and then saw the victim who ran up to the house.

One of the suspects was described as a younger male with blotchy facial hair, short hair, similar to a crew cut, white or gray shirt with jeans. The vehicle was, or similar to, a Honda four door.

Officers checked the area and spoke to people in the neighborhood. The subjects and vehicle were not located.

Anyone who may have information on this case is asked to call the Aberdeen Police Department at 533-3180 or the APD tip line at 538-4450.

Today, Grays Harbor Community Hospital and MultiCare Health System announced they have signed a Letter of Intent to establish an affiliation network between the two health systems.

This affiliation network will bring together the resources of two strong health care providers committed to improving the health of their communities. The two organizations will work together to share clinical best practices and expand services in Grays Harbor County and the surrounding region. The two systems share a long history of serving their communities. MultiCare Health System, founded in 1882, operates five hospitals in Pierce and South King counties, including MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. Grays Harbor Community Hospital, founded in 1890, operates two campuses; one providing acute care and the other a specialty medical center.

“We are excited to build on our longstanding relationship with Grays Harbor Community Hospital to help improve access to care services for area residents,” said Diane Cecchettini, RN, President and CEO of MultiCare Health System. “Our two systems have collaborated for years, particularly in high-risk obstetric and pediatric care. From our experience working with Grays Harbor physicians and staff, we deeply appreciate their commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care. We are honored to partner with Grays Harbor in support of their mission of care for their community.”

“Collaborating with MultiCare will benefit our community by offering expanded specialty care right here close to home,” said Grays Harbor Community Hospital Board Chair Sharon Schermer. “Grays Harbor Community Hospital will remain locally owned and independent. This new collaboration allows for integration of services to provide expanded access to specialists, including maternal-fetal medicine, cardiac care and neurology. Details of the collaboration, including start date, are being discussed.”

“MultiCare Health System is recognized both locally and nationally as being a leader in the provision of care, their commitment to patients, their investment in technology and their involvement in the communities they serve,” said Grays Harbor Community Hospital CEO Tom Jensen. “We are excited to work with an organization that is so closely aligned to our mission and vision.”

Clam diggers will get one more chance to dig razor clams this season during a three-day opening at Twin Harbors, running Friday through Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

The morning dig scheduled May 24-26 got the green light from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) after marine toxin tests showed the clams at Twin Harbors are safe to eat.

All other ocean beaches will remain closed to clam digging, and digging at Twin Harbors must end each day at noon.

“This last dig caps off a great season,” said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. “Since last October, diggers have harvested more than five million razor clams, making this season the most productive in over 20 years.”

Ayres said annual harvest quotas have been met at all razor-clam beaches except Twin Harbors, which started the season with an exceptionally large population of razor clams. WDFW also adopted a new method to set catch levels at Twin Harbors and Long Beach, which also boosted the allowable harvest at both beaches this season, he said.

Harvest limits aside, Ayres said WDFW routinely closes the razor clam fishery by the end of May to give the clams a chance to spawn. The next season will begin in fall, when the older clams have recovered from spawning and a new generation begins to grow beneath the sand.

Low morning tides during the upcoming openings at Twin Harbors are as follows:

*         May 24, Friday, 6:34 a.m., -1.7 ft.

*         May 25, Saturday, 7:21 a.m., -2.2 ft.

*         May 26, Sunday, 8:09 a.m., -2.4 ft.

Clam diggers are limited to 15 razor clams per day, and are required to keep the first 15 clams they dig. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container.

To participate, diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable 2013-14 fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses are available online (https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/), by phone (1-866-320-9933) and from license dealers around the state.

Offices up for re-election include Grays Harbor Sheriff and city council positions throughout the county.

Sheriff Rick Scott was appointed in October of last year when Mike Whelan retired after 35 years with the department. The Grays Harbor County Commissioners appointed the former Undersheriff to the position and he will now need to run to retain.

In Aberdeen, 6 city council positions are open for election. The 4-year terms are available in wards throughout the city. Six positions are also up for election in Hoquiam. The cities of Cosmopolis, Ocean Shores, Westport, Montesano, Elma, McCleary, and Oakville all have council positions available.

Mayors Gary Dent of McCleary and Charles Norskog of Oakville, and Port of Grays Harbor Commissioner Chuck Caldwell have re-filed in order to retain their seats in the open election. Numerous fire district and school boards seats from the coast to East County are all available.

All filings must be submitted by the end of the business day on Friday. May 20 is the last day for candidates to withdraw.

Drivers, boaters and residents around Lake Washington should be on the lookout for State Route 520 bridge pontoons moving through the lake this month.

Contractor crews will float one pontoon through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard between 3 and 6 p.m. this afternoon, Wednesday, May 15. A pontoon already on the lake will be moved from its current staging location to another location on the lake, making way for a pontoon from Aberdeen to use that staging area when it arrives on the lake later this month.

Two of the six pontoons recently constructed in Aberdeen have been towed to a moorage site in Tacoma and a third is on its way later this week. The final two pontoons from the second cycle of pontoons built in Aberdeen will remain moored in Grays Harbor until they are needed for bridge construction.

On Lake Washington, crews will prepare four pontoons from the first cycle built in Aberdeen for additional modifications recommended by an expert review panel in February. The Washington State Department of Transportation is coordinating with floating bridge contractor Kiewit/General/Manson, A Joint Venture, to finalize the details and timeline of the work.

Unbuckled and distracted drivers will be the target when “Click it or Ticket” patrols begin in Grays Harbor County this month.

Between May 20 and June 2, drivers can expect to see law enforcement in search of unbuckled drivers and passengers and drivers using their cell phones.

In June 2002, when the primary seat belt law went into effect, approximately 82 percent of Washington drivers wore seat belts and today, nearly 97 percent of Washington drivers are buckling up. Now, their focus has added distracted drivers who are texting or talking on their cell phones as a priority

Last year, during this time period, officers statewide issued 3,171 seat belt violations amongst the 11,047 motorists who were stopped.

Similarly, last year during this time period, 1,059 cell phone violations were written. In 2010, the same year cell phone use became a primary law in Washington, only 63 drivers were cited statewide.

In Grays Harbor County, the Aberdeen, Cosmopolis, Elma, Hoquiam, Montesano and Ocean Shores Police Departments, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol will be teaming up and participating in these extra patrols, with the support of the Grays Harbor Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force.

These and all extra patrols are part of Target Zero—striving to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030.
