HHS CHEERLEADERS WIN WTSC GRANT

October 31, 2011

The Hoquiam High School Cheer Team, led by coach Charlotte Helland, has been busy getting the word out about the dangers of texting and driving and other forms of distracted driving.

The Cheer Team’s educational efforts will land them a $500 State Farm grant being administered by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission in Olympia.

To earn the grant, the cheerleaders are:

* passing out brochures about the dangers of texting and driving,

* holding up banners visible to traveling motorists,

* putting up posters around the school and community,

* getting their fellow students to make a commitment that they won’t text and drive and

* conducting a survey of their fellow students on the distracted driving issue.

WTSC Program Manager Jonna VanDyk says the Hoquiam Cheer Team will be the first group in the state to qualify for the $500 grant.
