EXCLUSIVE: JAIL SUICIDE ATTEMPT MAY HAVE BEEN STAGED

October 28, 2011 Comments off

The Grays Harbor Jail inmate who tried to kill himself last week and ended up being shot and killed last Friday may have staged his suicide as an escape attempt.

In an exclusive interview with KXRO, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott says they’ve learned John Gary Lies was wanted on out-of-state felony warrants and if he was convicted in Washington state would have faced long prison sentences because of his criminal history.

Scott believes that Lies attempted suicide as a way to get out of the jail and into a lower-security facility so he could escape.

After his suicide attempt Lies was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

It was there where Lies escaped custody and subsequently took a woman hostage using a knife.

Lies was shot by an officer after he refused to to drop the knife.

The officer who shot Lies remains on paid administrative leave as the investigation into last week’s incident continues.

SIMPSON ADDRESSING DAILY WORLD ENDORSEMENT DRAWS FIRE

October 27, 2011 Comments off

During the Mayor’s Report at Wednesday’s Aberdeen City Council Meeting, Bill Simpson took a moment to address comments published by the Daily World in its endorsement of his opponent, Paul Fritts.

Simpson addressed the Daily World’s assertion that “the status quo isn’t good enough for Aberdeen”, saying he’s proud of his tenure as mayor and proud of the department heads who he says have gotten the city through some pretty tough times.

He added the budget had to stay “status quo” because with people losing their jobs and houses, now is not the time for a tax increase.

Councilman Paul Fritts says it’s unfortunate that Simpson chose to use his time at the Council meeting to campaign for office.

Fritts says he feels what Simpson did during last night’s meeting was unethical and he wishes the Mayor would keep the campaign outside the Council – where Fritts says it belongs.

In the August primary election Simpson garnered 60 more votes than Fritts.
