Pacific County Officials Warn of Scam

January 3, 2013

Pacific County Fire District #1 is warning residents of a scam. Wednesday morning, a resident reported that they received a call from a man at their home to ask for a donation to the “Ocean Park Fire Department.”

When the resident hesitated, a woman then got on the phone and asked them to read the numbers off the bottom of his check. The resident refused, and hung up the phone. Then he called the Fire District directly.

Officials warn residents of this scam. They say that local Pacific County fire departments do not use phone solicitation as a means to request donations.

To keep your identity and your banking information safe, you should never give this information over the phone, unless you know the person you are talking to. Instead, find the number of the company online or in the phone directory and call to ask if the request is legitimate.
