GHC award $45,000 in scholarships

October 31, 2013

More than 20 scholarships, including two new ones funded by Bi-Mart, were awarded recently to students currently attending Grays Harbor College by the College’s Foundation.

The Fall awards, totaling $45,000, are in addition to the more than $500,000 in scholarships presented in the Spring for the year at GHC. Several of the scholarships are funded through the Forest C. and Ruth V. Kelsey Foundation, designated for Harbor students who are studying automotive, nursing, education and forestry.

Bi-Mart, new to Grays Harbor, is a Northwest corporation owned by its employees and the new GHC scholarships are designated for students studying business. Bi-Mart employees raise scholarship funds by hosting an annual golf tournament.

According to the Bi-Mart announcement of the scholarships, the employees “hope to have a positive and powerful impact on the lives of the student recipients, with the long-term goal of helping GHC prepare students for employment.”

Two other new scholarships at GHC are the Kasey Lee Caskey Memorial Scholarship donated by his family to a student enrolled in carpentry or another vocational program; and scholarship established by the daughter of Ronald Murray Catlin, which is open to all students, with a preference to those studying history.

“The College Foundation encourages other area businesses to join Bi-Mart in supporting GHC students realize their dreams of an education.” said GHC Foundation President Shelli Hopsecger, “This community continues to be so generous to our College students, a tradition that began more than 80 years when the College first open”.
