Survey looks to decrease local alcohol abuse

November 1, 2013

A recently established community coalition in Hoquiam called “My TOWN – Transforming our Wellness Now” is focused on decreasing alcohol use and its negative consequence. They are requesting residents to participate in an online survey.

“Our goal is to understand all the factors that contribute to youth alcohol use and then engage the community in working together to make a significant change”, explains Kurtis Dawson, Chair elect.

Funding for the coalition comes from the State’s Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery and communities are chosen based on their needs and more importantly, their readiness to address community change.

“Although Hoquiam was identified as a high need community, we see this as an opportunity to make a positive change and transform the health of the whole Harbor. Our coalition name is meant to empower every member of the community to take ownership of our own future,” says Dawson. “The first step in this process is to understand the problem so that we can make data-driven decisions. Please help us by taking the time to share your voice.”

Paper versions of the survey were included in Hometown Sanitation bills this month and although the survey is primarily aimed at Hoquiam residents, all adults in Grays Harbor County are encouraged to participate.
