Cosmopolis Marshall Silas W. Smith, End of Watch November 15, 1901
102 years ago today, Cosmopolis Town Marshal Silas Smith was shot and killed while serving a warrant on a man over a dispute involving a house.
According to online sources, 57 year old Smith and the Aberdeen marshal attempted to arrest a man, and after being cooperative, the man suddenly began to resist arrest. He insisted he was permitted to be armed because he was a U.S. letter carrier and fired a .32-caliber handgun at the marshals.
Smith was struck in the chest and he died instantly. The other marshal was also hit and the suspect was wounded. After both the marshal and suspect ran out of ammunition, the Aberdeen marshal struck the suspect in the head with his pistol, knocking him unconscious and was taken to the hospital before being booked into jail.
