Multiple accidents on SR 12

November 18, 2013

A car caught fire after it struck a cable barrier, blocking traffic for hours on State Route 12.

Just after 1:30 on Sunday, a 76 year old Elma woman was driving east on SR 12 near the Satsop River Bridge when the accident occurred.

The woman was driving her 2000 Dodge Stratus, when she attempted to change lanes. There was already a vehicle in the left lane, so the woman swerved to the right to avoid hitting the other car. When she did, she overcorrected and lost control, sliding into the median and striking a cable barrier. The Stratus caught fire after the accident.

A 27 year old Montesano man was also in the car, but neither passenger was injured.

The road was closed for 1 hour after the crash. Traffic was blocked in one lane for hours as crews removed the vehicle and commenced road work to repair damage.

The Elma woman was charged with making an unsafe lane change.

The accident on State Route 12 led to a 2nd accident on Sunday.

A 27 year old Elma man was driving east in a 2001 Honda Accord when he hit a 33 year old Elma man in a 2000 Ford Focus.

The 27 year old was driving as they approached a traffic backup because of the earlier accident. When the man began to slow, the other car struck the back of the Focus.

The 33 year old driver was transported to Summit Pacific Medical Center for his injuries; the 27 year old was not injured.

The 27 year old was charged with Following Too Close.
