Instant classic for Myrtle Street Rivalry Game

January 18, 2014

The Hoquiam Grizzlies and the Aberdeen Bobcats have their share of classic games and this one was no different.

The Grizzly boys hung on at the end to get the win 52 to 51 over the Bobcats in this non-league contest at Hoquiam Square Garden Friday night. Junior Evan Newton led Hoquiam with 17 points and propelled them to a second half come back with 14 points in the second half.

Newton’s most important point came with 6.5 seconds left in the game when he made a free throw on the front end of a one and one opportunity that made the score 52 to 48 in favor of the Grizzlies.

Newton missed the next free throw and Aberdeen’s Austin Floch, a Junior, drained a long range three pointer with what the referees decided was .3 seconds left to bring the Bobcats within one. Hoquiam would let the .3 flash off the clock without incident and take home the win and force a split of the series this year as Aberdeen won the previous match-up in Aberdeen.

Floch led all scorers with 19 points including 11 in the second half.

Hoquiam Scoring: Blake Kelly 2, Evan Newton 17, Devin Kelly 4, Jerod Steen 6, Jack Adams III 7, Jace Varner 8, Camden Anderson 2, and Joel Brydon 6.

Aberdeen Scoring: Payton Campbell 3, Cole Edwards 7, Addam Follett 12, Austin Floch 19, Jacob Black 4, Lorenzo Ontiveros 2, Aaron Taylor 2, and Chandler Craig 2. Played but did not score: Deon Schlesser and Veek Cheema.
