Hoquiam assault involving shotgun

February 24, 2014

Friday night, the Hoquiam Police Department was called following a shooting in the 1400 block of Burns Street in Hoquiam.

A 29 year old Hoquiam man called to report an argument with his 37 year old neighbor, who allegedly fired a shot at him and then ran inside his garage.

Officers from the Hoquiam, Aberdeen, and Cosmopolis Police, along with a deputy from the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office, were on scene.

The 37 year old suspect was believed to still be inside the home. Several attempts were made to get the suspect to surrender, by phone, loudspeaker, and family members.

A search warrant for the home was obtained and early Saturday morning, the multi-agency Crisis Response Unit was activated and responded.

Around 8 am, CRU deployed tear gas, entered and searched the home, but the suspect was not inside. After clearing the home, officers started processing the scene and collected evidence including a spent shotgun shell and the shotgun believed to be used in the incident.

Just after 9 am, Detective Sergeant Krohn was contacted by a neighbor, saying that she had just returned home and found the suspect hiding inside her garage.

Krohn contacted the suspect and took him into custody without incident. The man said that before he fired a shot, his neighbor had threatened him.

The suspect was booked into Grays Harbor County Jail for Assault in the 2nd Degree. He has an extensive criminal history involving assault, drugs, and driving with a suspended license.
