Emerson Manor Evacuation: Week 2
It has been a week since 60+ residents of the Emerson Manor were told they only had hours to grab everything they could and evacuate the building due to high bacteria levels.
According to Grays Harbor County Emergency Management, an army comprising of Red Cross and local and regional agencies and volunteers converged upon the premises and within 3 hours, successfully evacuated every tenant to the Immanuel Baptist Church or with family and Friends.
The next day, all tenants sheltering at the church were provided lodging in an area motel and most were reunited with their pets. Since there are no kitchens in the temporary housing, numerous groups came forward in an all-out effort to be sure all residents received two meals a day.
Numerous cleaning experts who have taken air and material samples in the Emerson, as well as initiating drying of the halls and apartments, removal of carpeting and wet drywall.
The Grays Harbor County Commissioners held a special meeting Friday and passed a contract amendment with Coastal Community Action Program that provides resources to address the emergency shelter needs of the low income seniors and disabled residents.
The efforts continue to find a permanent home for each resident until the Emerson can be fully cleaned and re-opened.
Anchor Bank, also displaced due to the bacteria, started a fund to assist the residents called the Emerson Manor Assistance Fund with donations accepted at all Anchor Bank locations.
