Local RadioShack and Staples stores are safe for now
Following reports of RadioShack and Staples stores closing nationwide, local stores have not been impacted.
Radio Shack announced plans to close as many as 1,100 stores, nearly 20% of its locations after sales at the stores fell 19% in the last quarter. The company told CNN last week that the closings will leave it with more than 4,000 stores, including 900 operated as franchise locations.
Staples told USA Today that it will close 225 stores in North America by the end of 2015, also due to falling fourth-quarter revenue as sales increasingly shift online. Staples says that the closings will affect about 12% of the company’s North American outlets and are part of a plan to save $500 million in costs by the end of next year.
According to managers at both Staples and RadioShack, they tell KXRO that they have not heard of any plans to close their locations in Aberdeen.
Additional rumors regarding the Aberdeen Ross store being on a closure list are also not impacting the local location, as a manager tells KXRO that they are “good to stay.”
Official details on the closure lists and representatives from the companies were not immediately available.
