Pontoon construction in final stretch
As a pontoon built in March of last year was placed on Lake Washington this week, the Washington State Department of Transportation is in the final stretch of the project.
On Saturday, crews worked throughout the day to move Pontoon A from its moorage site near Medina to its permanent location about 50 feet north of the existing floating bridge.
Crews secured the pontoon in place with large steel cables attached to anchors secured to the lakebed. Once the new SR 520 floating bridge is complete, Pontoon A and Pontoon W, now anchored opposite Pontoon A, will bookend the new bridge’s 21 longitudinal pontoons.
Local pontoon construction is estimated to finish up in Aberdeen in the spring of 2015.
The contractor has two more cycles to build. Cycle 5, which just got underway, is expected to be completed late this year.
The final cycle is only 3 pontoons and should be finished a bit faster.
