Train derailment off Devonshire Rd
Puget Sound & Pacific Railway crews are on scene following this afternoon’s derailment outside of Montesano.
7 cars are tipped over near a railroad crossing on the Old Highway. These grain cars were heading west, into Aberdeen, and heading to the Port of Grays Harbor.
A PSP worker on site told KXRO that the cause is still under investigation. Additional crews are en route.
Following a derailment near State Street on April 29th that tipped a grain car and the cars that came off the tracks in East Aberdeen on May 9, this is the third derailment on local tracks in 2 and a half weeks locally.
PSP, a division of Genesee & Wyoming, operates all of the tracks coming into Aberdeen that the accidents have occurred.
Residents have pointed to the recent derailments as a major concern towards bringing crude by rail shipments into Grays Harbor, while others have questioned the timing and frequency asking if there may be more issues than just rail condition.
Officials have stated that if the crude by rail projects move into construction phases, the local rail system would need to be upgraded to handle the specifically designed cars.
