Investigation into comments by Sheriff’s Deputy to Montesano City officials completed

June 16, 2014

Any investigation into a letter sent by City of Montesano employees to Sheriff Rick Scott is completed.

Public Works Director Rocky Howard and City Administrator Kristy Powell sent a letter to the home address of Sheriff Scott, not his office, following a city council meeting when a Sheriff’s Deputy spoke, out of uniform, during public comment regarding Howard and Powell. Deputy Rydman said in the open forum that the employees had driven without a seat belt on a number of occasions.

In the letter to Sheriff Scott, the employees said that Rydman was “very confrontational and acrimonious in his presentation”. The letter goes on to ask that if the issue was personal, Rydman should “discontinue this public accusation as it makes the city look bad, and the Sheriff’s department as if we are not doing our jobs properly.”

According to Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate, the Sheriff’s Office investigated claims into the way Rydman commented and found no wrongdoing.

According to Montesano Mayor Ken Estes, there will be no more investigation within the city as everyone involved exercised their 1st Amendment rights.
